Respiratory alkalosis occurs when the levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood are not balanced. Our body needs oxygen to function properly. We all inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Normally the respiratory system keeps these two gasses in balance. Respiratory alkalosis occurs when breathing becomes too rapid and deep, or difficulty breathing and carbon dioxide levels become too low. This increases the pH of the blood and becomes highly alkaline. This is called respiratory alkalosis. In respiratory alkalosis the blood pH level is higher than normal.
